Analysis
Review as a non-educator: Excellent resource for educators and parents. This book is centered on teacher-directed and child-centered learning that provides clear explanations and models in every chapter. Many of the explanations contain metaphors and everyday life examples that allow non-educators the ability to understand the various methods and strategies discussed. The table of contents is easy to navigate and structured for easy selection of topics or activities. Additionally, the book provides extensive appendices
and a glossary to refer to for all concepts and activities discussed throughout
the book.
Review as an educator: Finding a way to introduce word study to children of varying abilities in our world of authentic literature is challenging, at best. In our attempts to recognize and value the fact that each child is a unique learner who does best when taught at their own individual level, we have lost some of the ease of teaching: the ability to plan a lesson for the whole class and then carry it out. This book is written and created so that teachers anywhere can begin to implement this program with their children or students without buying additional resources. Within each section of the text, teachers can find a wide assortment of activities that can be put into play within the classroom depending on the current level of each individual student. Although classroom sets can be purchased (which are quite nicely put together) a teacher does not need to buy them in order to begin using the program. In our culture of ownership and money-making and copyrighting, this is quite refreshing. These authors have not only shared theory, they also provide the resources to go along with it.
